World Environment Day is the largest international platform dedicated to environmental awareness and action. The event is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and celebrated annually since 1973. It mobilises millions of people across the globe in support of environmental protection.

Across Dangote, it is our tradition to join the global community in commemorating this important day. On June 5, 2025, we will once again reaffirm our commitment to environmental sustainability as we celebrate World Environment Day under the theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Plastic waste poses a significant threat to every aspect of the environment – from ecosystems and wildlife to human health and the climate.

Tackling plastic pollution is essential to achieving key Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to climate action – SDG13, responsible consumption and production – SDG12, ocean and marine protection – SDG14, and ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation – SDG15.

We recognise the importance of our role in environmental sustainability and are committed to the development and application of HSSE & Sustainability policies, standards, and guidelines in our projects execution and business operations. We continuously fund internal initiatives, collaborate with other organisations, and publicly report our environmental sustainability efforts. Over the past two years, at our headquarters, we have recycled approximately 150kg of plastic waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills.

We have installed custom-designed waste bins with separate compartments for plastics, paper, and general waste, and educated ourselves on the importance of waste segregation. Some of our businesses that use plastic-based packaging have initiatives to collect waste packaging and partner NGOs to repurpose them into shopping bags.

This year, we are expanding our efforts through collaboration. We are proud to partner Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), renowned for their creative reuse of plastic waste in art. Together, we will construct a surface tunnel made from plastic waste collected from their campus and Dangote HQ office. Additionally, a “P|astic-to-Art” competition will be organised for secondary schools in the Ibeju-Lekki and Epe axis, promoting environmental education and creativity among young people.

We have some internal activities lined up to engage staff at the Group’s headquarters as well as other business locations. At the headquarters, we will be gifting staff with jute shopping bags. We expect this will help staff to reduce the quantity of plastic shopping bags used and disposed as well as help them to reduce cost incurred on buying plastic shopping bags. I encourage all staff to participate in all the activities.

Whilst the Group remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the environment, we must each take personal responsibility for our impacts. choices we make- both professionally and personally-can help preserve the land, water, and natural resources that sustain healthy living for all.

Let us join hands in building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
